FAQ

Everything you need to know about Lahijan koloocheh and Honey Bird Sweets

About the Product

Q1: What is koloocheh?
Koloocheh (sometimes spelled kolooche ) is a traditional Persian filled cookie originating from Lahijan, a city in Northern Iran. It features a tender, cardamom-infused shell wrapped around a soft filling — most commonly walnut, pistachio, or coconut. For a full introduction, see What Is Koloocheh?

Q2: What does koloocheh taste like?
Koloocheh has a delicate, slightly sweet flavor with warm cardamom notes. The shell is soft and crumbly, and the filling adds richness and texture — nutty for walnut and pistachio, tropical and sweet for coconut. It pairs perfectly with Persian tea or coffee.

Q3: Where does koloocheh come from?
Authentic koloocheh originates from Lahijan, a small city in the Gilan province of Northern Iran. Lahijan is famous for its tea gardens and has been making this traditional Persian cookie for generations. Each region of Iran has its own variations, but Lahijani koloocheh is considered one of the most beloved.

Q4: What's the difference between koloocheh and other Persian cookies?
Unlike crisp Persian cookies such as nan-e nokhodchi (chickpea cookies) or nan-e berenji (rice cookies), koloocheh is soft and filled. It has a doughy outer shell and a generous filling inside, similar in concept to a stuffed pastry. The cardamom-forward flavor and Lahijan origin make it distinctly different from other Iranian sweets.

Q5: How many cookies are in a box, and how big are they?
Four cookies per box. Each box is 7 oz (200 g), and each cookie weighs 50 g. Walnut and pistachio are 185 calories per cookie; coconut is 170.

Q6: Which filling should I choose?
Walnut is the traditional Lahijan filling and the usual first box. Pistachio is milder and the popular choice for gifts. Coconut is the sweetest and the lightest. See our filling guide for a side-by-side comparison.

Ingredients & Allergens

Q7: Are your cookies vegan or dairy-free?
Our koloocheh is dairy-free in all varieties — walnut, pistachio, and coconut. However, it is not vegan because it contains eggs. It is vegetarian: no meat and no animal fat.

Q8: Are your cookies kosher or halal?
We are not currently certified kosher or halal, but our ingredients are simple. If certification is important to you, please reach out and we'll be happy to share our full ingredients list.

Q9: Do your cookies contain nuts?
Yes — our walnut koloocheh contains walnuts, and our pistachio koloocheh contains pistachios. Coconut is classified as a tree nut for US labeling purposes. All three flavors are baked on a single production line and share equipment, so any variety may carry traces of the others. If you have a serious nut allergy, please consider this carefully before ordering.

Q10: What are the main ingredients?
Wheat flour, sugar, vegetable shortening, wheat starch, vegetable oil, egg, the chosen filling (walnut, pistachio, or coconut), baking powder, citric acid, and natural and artificial flavoring. The full ingredient list and nutrition panel are on each product page.

Freshness & Storage

Q11: How long does koloocheh stay fresh?
Four months in the original sealed packaging. Every box has its expiry date printed on it, so you never have to guess. Once opened, reseal the wrap and enjoy within two to three weeks — the dough dries out before it spoils.

Q12: How should I store koloocheh?
At room temperature, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not refrigerate: the cold firms up the dough and dulls the flavor.

Q13: Can I freeze koloocheh?
We don't recommend it. Koloocheh is made to be stored at room temperature, and both freezing and refrigeration change the texture of the dough. With a four-month shelf life, there is rarely a reason to.
